"Because heart disease is such a serious problem, women need to know their risk, and take action to prevent it," says Teresa Welsh, MD, internist at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. "The Red Dress Tea is a fun way to get women talking about heart disease and the risks associated with it." Kaiser Permanente Colorado is rated number one in the country for cholesterol management, which is a key factor in preventing heart disease, according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Because of its strong commitment to preventing heart disease, Kaiser Permanente Colorado is a proud sponsor of the Red Dress event. The event is expected to attract more than 600 people to the Grand Ballroom at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Denver. In addition to the fashion show, high tea and entertainment, noted Denver cardiologist Susan Polizzi, MD, will share tips on how women can make healthy lifestyle changes to prevent heart disease and related conditions. Among the risk factors most important in predicting heart disease risk are physical inactivity, smoking, and high LDL cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Family history also has an effect, but exercise and quitting smoking can dramatically and immediately reduce a woman's risk of heart disease. Kaiser Permanente is a non-profit organization and the largest private health care provider in Colorado. It is rated among the top ten accredited health care organizations in the country for clinical quality by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
