News release: Colorado - Denver/BoulderJune 8, 2000 For more information, call: Operations chief to take post with Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Division Denver, CO – R. Michael Alexander, vice president and executive director of Kaiser Permanente's Denver/Boulder market, has accepted a position in the nonprofit health care organization's Northern California Division. Alexander joined Kaiser Permanente of Colorado right out of college 28 years ago, eventually becoming the chief executive in charge of operations at 17 medical and administrative offices. He oversees 3,400 employees who serve 333,000 Kaiser Permanente members in the Denver/Boulder area. He also is active in numerous community organizations. "I will miss Mike's expertise, leadership, and friendship, as will many in our organization and in the Denver community," said Chris Binkley, president of the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Region. "But this is a challenging opportunity for Mike, and I'm happy for him. And I am thrilled that Kaiser Permanente will not lose his talents." Alexander will be senior vice president and service area manager in Northern California's Central Area. That includes the cities of Fresno, Stockton, and Modesto. Membership growth in that area presents new challenges, plus Alexander will be in charge of a Kaiser Permanente hospital. In Colorado, Kaiser Permanente does not operate a hospital, instead contracting with area hospitals such as Exempla Saint Joseph and Boulder Community. "It's not easy, after 28 years, to leave this organization--which by several measures has been rated the best HMO in Colorado," Alexander said. "But I'm excited by the prospect of helping run a hospital, and all the new challenges that brings." Alexander joined Kaiser Permanente's Colorado Region in June 1972, three years after the organization first opened its doors in Denver. He was responsible for the opening of the organization's first suburban medical office, in Lakewood. He rose through the ranks over the years, becoming vice president of operations in 1992. He was named vice president and executive director in January 1997. Alexander, a Denver native, is outgoing chairman of the board of Junior Achievement, is current chairman of the board of the Kempe Children's Foundation, and is a member of the board of the Colorado Children's Campaign. He was a professor in the University of Denver master's of health administration program. He begins his new duties on July 10.
